One More Song
One More Song is a reunion of sorts, a story of friendships made in a different time.
During the consecutive summers of 2011, 2012 and 2013 Russ Pope put together a series of art shows at House of Vans in Brooklyn New York called Supply & Demand. These shows featured a group of artists he was working with as a small collective Vai Vans shoes. There was a sense of camaraderie and of fun plus a truly moving visual display of artistic energy from a very diverse group of artist. Jay Howell, Rich Jacobs, Russ Pope, Nathaniel Russell, Chris Yormick were those artists and I was lucky enough to be a part of these shows which made a huge impact on me to this day. Here we are 20 years later and by chance I am offered to curate a group show at Minnow art so what do I do? A reunion of sorts with a band that parted ways years ago but still has loose connections and friendships in one way or another. I decided to call the show “One More Song” because it feels like we are standing on the stage at the end of the show & someone in the crowd screams out “FREE BIRD” which isn’t our song but we decide to play it anyway in our own way
Rich Jacobs is an American artist and curator who currently lives and works in Brooklyn NYC. Jacobs has exhibited in the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Inspired by graffiti, psychedelic and folk art, Jacobs' raw, colorful work frequently appears on a broad range of materials such as magazines, books, CD and LP covers (including most of the albums for Salt Lake City-based group Iceburn), footwear, apparel (such as parkas, skirts and dresses), skateboards, buildings, pillows and so on. Rich Jacobs is an avid zine maker & In my opinion the leading most authority on skateboard zine history.
Russ Pope is an American artist and curator born 1970 in Los Angeles, CA. Russ currently lives and works in New Hampshire. Russ Pope's art draws from the social and political environment surrounding him in his daily life. Pope's inspirations have been skateboarding, music and the creative, interesting people he encounters daily. His bold strokes, finite doodles and striking paintings are comprised of faces, still-life portraits and humorous events. From his early days in Central California, skateboarding, drawing and attending punk shows, to his current life in New England, Russ has processed life and his interactions with his world through the prism of a pen and a paintbrush.
Jay Howell is a Los Angeles based illustrator, artist and cartoonist. He was exposed to the punk music early in life by his older sister and immediately developed a deep love for skateboarding and the D.I.Y. ethos it shared with the punk community. Early on, Jay began making his own self-published zines of art and drawing graphics for skateboards. Jay now lives and works in Los Angeles with his rescue dog, Street Dog.
Nathaniel Russell was born and raised in Indiana. After college, Russell spent several years in the San Francisco Bay Area making posters, record covers, and woodcuts. He returned to his home city of Indianapolis and now spends his time creating drawings, fake fliers, bad sculptures, wood shapes, and music. Russell’s work is regularly shown around the world in both traditional galleries and informal spaces, usually surrounded by an expanding list of friends, collaborators, and like-minded folk. He frequently returns to his second home of California to work with friends on projects as varied as murals, print workshops, and backyard musical performances.
Chris Yormick is an artist currently living in New York City. He lived his teenage years in Washington D.C doing teenage things. Chris has shown his work in galleries and on walls in lands near and far. He also pushed a mouse around for clients such as DefJam, S Footwear, and Skateboarder Mag., Chris has since ditched the computer and finds serenity in the brushes, paint and what-have-you’s.
Jai Tanju is an photographer, artist & curator from Long Island New York who currently lives and works in San Jose Ca.
